George Formby talk for club

Entertainer George Formby was the subject of a talk to Alfreton Inner Wheel at the latest meeting.

Guest speaker Roger Glew delivered the talk on the star as well as performing some of its hits.

The late actor and singer from the 1930s and 40s was known for his light, comical songs, usually playing the ukulele.

His songs such as ‘When I’m Cleaning Window’s werey popular during the Second World War.

In February the Inner Wheel Club of Alfreton celebrated their 68th anniversary at the Pavilion Suite at Morley Hayes.

Candles were lit by Eileen Key to the past, president Sue Curley to the present, newest member Iris Fawcett to the future, and Clair Nightingale the International candle.

District Chairman Carole O’Connor and President Sue cut the birthday cake.

Members and visitors from other Clubs in District 22 enjoyed a superb lunch, followed by coffee and birthday cake, made by President Sue.

After lunch greetings were given by district chairman Carole O’Connor and Alfreton Rotary President Colin Thornton.

Sue then introduced guest speaker Roger Glew, from Sheffield, whose subject was ‘The George Formby Story’. Roger told many interesting facts and stories about George Formby and sang many of his popular songs, with audience participation.

Vice-president Margaret Day gave a vote of thanks and Di Hylton, President of Swadlincote Club responded on behalf of the visitors.

President Sue wished everyone a safe journey home Charter with a lunch. See picture right.
