Fundraising barbecue at Roper Avenue Allotments in Heanor

ALLOTMENT holders from Heanor are to stage a fundraising barbecue at the weekend.

The event takes place on Sunday, June 19, at the allotments off Lockton Avenue, from 11am to 2pm.

They have invited people to join them for the fun, with includes activities such as a raffle, plant and produce stall, cake stall as well as the barbecue.

Half of the money raised at the event will go towards the Blend Youth Project based at Mundy Street in the town the project works with local young people to provide a space where they can feel safe and supported to aspire and achieve in their lives and to be able to engage in activities and programmes designed to capture and release their potential.

Ian Tannahill, Head of Youth Work Development from Blend, said: “We’re really pleased to be a part of the fundraising with Roper Avenue allotments. As a project we value the support of the local community and this is a great opportunity for us to connect with another local project. It also provides a place in the community for us to take young people to visit and fits in well with the cookery and healthy eating workshops we run at our centre on Mundy Street.”

The remaining half of the funds raised will be used towards an environmentally friendly composting toilet.

Richard Iliffe, Chairman of Roper Avenue allotments, said: “We’re all looking forward to the BBQ fundraiser, especially as the money we aim to raise will go to such a worthwhile project as Blend. We’re also looking forward in investing in a composting toilet, so more people can visit the allotment – and stay a little longer!”
