Figure your own budget

A NEW online calculator will give people the chance of setting the budget as Derbyshire County Council prepares to cut £22 million from its spending next year and 2,000 jobs by March 2015.

People can try balancing the books themselves at and see how their choices would affect services and Council Tax levels.

Councillor John Harrison, cabinet member for finance and management, said: “All local authorities are experiencing tough times and in Derbyshire we’re doing our best to make the most of the cash we’ve got by continuing to cut out waste, duplication and bureaucracy.

Cllr Anne Western, Leader of the Labour Group at Derbyshire County Council, agreed the calculator would give an insight into the decision-making process, but added: “I have a problem with the way these cuts are being targeted at the most vulnerable and the young.”
