Frederick Gent pupil Iqra Shah has been awarded the East Midlands Student of the Year at the Sky Sports Living for Sport Awards 2012.
Year ten GCSE student Iqra was joined by 11 other regional finalists from across the UK at a sport star studded awards ceremony at Sky Studios where she was presented with the award by Olympic heptathlete Jessica Ennis and sprint legend Darren Campbell.
The prizes recognise the efforts of students and teachers who have worked to promote sport in their school across the country.
Iqra got the award for helping to set up after school Zumba sessions with a group of girls in her year, which became so popular they were adopted into the school curriculum.
Head of PE at the South Normanton school Daniel Thompson, said her involvement in setting up the club has also helped boost her classroom grades.
He said: “Iqra has shown so much enthusiasm and commitment to this project and, although all of the girls did a great job, it is Iqra’s progress that has been the most noticeable both in the classroom and throughout the school day.”
