A Crich teenager will take the stage with one of the UK’s leading musical theatre companies for young people this summer after beating hundreds of other hopefuls.
Catriona Judd, 17, was up against applicants from across the country when she auditioned for the Youth Music Theatre UK at Birmingham Hippodrome earlier this year.
The company’s most famous former members are Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith, but many others are forging careers at some of the most prestigious theatres in the UK.
She said: “I performed with the Youth Music Theatre for the first time last year at the Barbican in Plymouth.
“I am so excited to have been selected again and I’m really looking forward to the residential. I love musical theatre and there will be lots of singing and dancing.
She will take part in a casting workshop this month with around 35 young actors and actresses before attending a three-week residential in August rehearsals followed by four performances at a theatre in Bracknell, Berkshire.
Catriona is studying drama, history and geography at Derby High School’s Sixth Form, but has been working towards her showbusiness dreams with dance classes at Déda in Derby and seven years of singing lessons too.
Her most recent starring role was as William in the school’s production of Goodnight Mister Tom.
She said: “After I’ve finished my A-levels I’m hoping to do a musical theatre degree in London.”
“I’d love to be a musical theatre actress. My family has always loved musicals and I’ve watched them from a young age. I go to London and Nottingham as often as I can to watch shows. My favourite role is Maria in the Sound of Music.”
Youth Music Theatre is a national performing arts company that specialises in creating brand new music theatre, working across the UK and Ireland with leading industry professionals to offer opportunities to young singers, actors, dancers and musicians.
