Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard on Wednesday, August 4, how James Edge, 24, of Queen’s Road, Hodthorpe, had consumed about seven or eight pints of beer before attacking his ex-partner.

Prosecuting solicitor Rod Chapman said: “The defendant and complainant had been in a relationship that had lasted some three years but it had come to an end.”

Mr Chapman added the reason for the end of the relationship was that the complainant had suffered a miscarriage and that had created difficulties for the couple.

But Edge visited the complainant’s home, on July 17, when he was drunk, according to Mr Chapman, and woke her up and he barged through the front door and grabbed her demanding to know who she was seeing and he pushed her against a wall.

Mr Chapman added: “The complainant left the room and was able to phone the police. But Edge saw the phone in her hand and he allegedly pulled her by her hair and took and threw the phone at a door causing it to come apart but with no permanent damage.”

Edge told police he had seven or eight pints of beer and the relationship break-up had been playing on his mind which is why he visited his ex.

He admitted pushing her and taking her phone off her.

Edge pleaded guilty to the assault which happened in Whitwell.

Mr Chapman added that the complainant has indicated that she does not support the prosecution case and does not want compensation, or for a restraining order to be imposed and she may wish to resume the relationship.

Defence solicitor John Wilford said: “Mr Edge accepts it was wrong to go around in a drunken state at that time.”

Magistrates adjourned the case to consider a probation report before sentencing Edge on August 24.

Edge was released on unconditional bail.
