A woman last month told police that she was walking her dog in a field next to Greenwich Park, Ripley, when she was allegedly approached by a man who demanded her pet.

It was claimed that the man tried to cut the dog’s lead, and the woman suffered cuts to her hand and thigh as she tried to stop him.

Police are asking people not to speculate about the incident.

A Derbyshire Constabulary spokesperson has now said: “Following enquiries by officers in relation to the reported incident of attempted dog theft in Greenwich Park, Ripley, on March 21, it has been found this was not as first reported.

“The person who called police in connection to this is receiving support and we would ask people not to speculate or comment in relation to the circumstances.”

They added: “While the number of dog thefts in Derbyshire are very low, we understand the impact this type of crime has on those involved.”
