Man stole a knife from supermarket

An Ironville man stole a knife to cut a loose wire on his earphones, a court heard.

John Ward took the knife from Tesco in Alfreton on March 27.

Ward, 30, of Victoria Street, admitted theft. He had previous convictions for dishonesty. He appeared in custody, after admitting dangerous driving and driving while banned.

“The earphone wire was coming loose and distorting the music and he wanted to cut it free. He could have ripped it off but he made the wrong decision,” said Denney Lau.

The Bench gave Ward a one-year conditional discharge, describing his explanation for the theft as “rather strange”.

He will be sentenced for the motoring offences later.
