Explosion caused by cable thieves in Alfreton

An attempted electrical cable theft left 900 homes in the Alfreton area without power last night.

An unknown number of offenders cut high voltage live electricity cabling attached to a wooden pole off Birchwood Road in Alfreton at around 7.30pm, police say.

A small explosion was caused, which lead to the pole catching fire and power cut to the surrounding area.

A police spokeswoman said the offenders would have likely been injured in the incident. The force is appealing for witnesses to the incident, or to anyone who noticed a family member, friend or neighbour with recent burns on Sunday evening to contact its non-emergency number, 101.
