The individuals were arrested in five separate addresses across the country – including Kilburn in Derbyshire, Nuneaton in Warwickshire and Bleasby in Nottinghamshire yesterday (April 20) following an investigation by the Environment Agency.

It comes after illegal waste sites were uncovered in Denby and Codnor, and also in parts of Warwickshire and Buckinghamshire following a probe by the public body.

Investigators from the Environment Agency were supported by police officers from across the three forces who made the five arrests and enabled to start to be gathered as part of an inquiry to uncover six sites which were being used to illegally dispose of waste around the country.

The investigation into the large-scale waste crime is expected to continue for several months after evidence was seized by police.

An Environment Agency spokesperson said: “The Environment Agency takes waste crime extremely seriously and we will persistently pursue those suspected of illegal waste activities.

“Illegal waste activity damages the environment and diverts money from legitimate businesses and at the Environment Agency we do everything we can to bring those responsible to account.”

Sergeant Andy Scruton from the Nuneaton Safer Neighbourhood Team added: “The illegal disposal of waste is a blight on our communities and we will always work hard with our partners in the Environment Agency to tackle it.”
