A GOLDEN couple have renewed their wedding vows in the sunshine after emigrating to Australia.
Jean and David Wainwright celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with friends and family on March 31.
The couple were originally from Matlock and featured in the Matlock Mercury when they got married.
Jean worked at Derbyshire Stone as a typist and David worked at Glapwell Colliery as an electrician.
David said: “We were also involved with the Venetian Nights at Matlock Bath in 1963 and 1964, and took the Tordale Cup for first prize, with the assistance of friends.
“We were also stall holders on Matlock Market in 1967 where we sold electrical items.
“As the pits were starting to close down we decided to emigrate to Perth, in Western Australia in 1968 with our three-year-old daughter June.”
Shortly after moving, the couple had a son, Paul and they now have eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
