Choir sings for George’s 100th

Singers from Codnor Methodist Church sang hymns and songs to celebrate the 100th birthday of an Leabrooks man.

George Welsh celebrated his birthday on May 2 at Ashmere Care Home, on Glasshouse Hill in Codnor Park.

George was born in Leabrooks, and is well known amongst staff for his sense of humour.

A churchgoer, George was a keen gardener in his younger years.

He likes listening to the Three Tenors classical singers and enjoys going to Leabrooks chapel.

He worked at Swanwick pit from the age of 14 to 55 and clearly remembers the date it was shut - September 26, 1968.
