Chatsworth House Trust and event organiser deny alleged failings after motorbike death

A crown court jury has been sworn-in today, Monday, July 18, before a trial begins into the death of a man at Chatsworth Horse Trials.

Derbyshire Dales District Council is prosecuting Chatsworth House Trust and event organiser Felicity Jane Reason for alleged offences committed under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

The council alleges that contraventions of health and safety law by the defendants led to the death of Frederick Bolton, of Sheffield, from injuries sustained when riding his motorcycle on the Chatsworth Estate at the horse trials in May, 2013.

Leicester Crown Court heard how the trust is accused of failing to ensure the safety of persons employed and failing to ensure that persons not in employment, including Mr Bolton, would not be exposed to safety risks at the entrance to the Ice House.

Miss Reason is charged with failing to ensure the safety of persons other than employees in that persons not in her employment, including Mr Bolton, would not be exposed to a health and safety risk at the entrance of the Ice House.

Both the trust and Miss Reason have pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Leicester Crown Court trial was adjourned until tomorrow, Tuesday, July 19, when the case is due to get underway and it is expected to run for two to three weeks.
