Charity challenges to raise £2,000

A hiking enthusiast has been organising a series of charity events, including one in Heanor in a bid to raise £2,000.

Debbie Birkin, along with 15 work colleagues, will also be trekking to Machu Picchu, 
Peru, one of the new seven wonders of the world.

The 39-year-old signed up to take part in the challenge to raise money for three charities; Teenage Cancer Trust, The Alzheimer’s Society and Prostate Cancer UK.

She said: “I wanted to get involved in something that would really push me and change my life. I can’t think of anything better than creating a unique experience whilst having the opportunity to help others. It’s a win-win situation.”

The hike is being funded by IT company Computacenter, where Debbie works as a 
databse administrator.

Computacenter will match donations to boost the fundraising efforts.

In the run up to the ten-day challenge, which takes place in October, Debbie, of Grey Meadow Road, Ilkeston, is 
also organising a charity exercise day in Heanor.

Studio Zone Fitness Club, Derby Road, Heanor, is hosting the event which includes an aerobathon and spinathon.It will be on Saturday, July 12, from 1pm to 3pm on, with donations of £3 required to get involved.

Debbie said she will be spending the next few months training.

She said: “I’ve always 
enjoyed exercise but the next few months are going to be testing. I hope other people will get sweating - or just donate, every little helps.”
