Staff at Alfreton-based outdoor gear specialist Terra Nova Equipment are celebrating taking the top spot in a coveted national award.

Launched this year and designed by their in-house experts, Terra Nova’s new Southern Cross 1 took the award for Best Tent in the prestigious UK Outdoor Industry Awards.

A panel of expert judges, including specialist outdoor retailers and journalists as well as a public vote saw them take the title which adds to an impressive list of accolades.

Based at Salcombe Road, Alfreton, Terra Nova Equipment employs 24 people and is renowned as a world-class outdoor gear specialist – holding multiple Guinness Records for the world’s lightest tents.

Terra Nova director Carolyn Budding said: “To achieve the highest industry recognition is testament to the great talent and knowledge of our on-site design team. We are constantly aiming to innovate and push the boundaries for outdoor gear – and we have certainly achieved this with the Southern Cross 1.

“Our tents have become the kit of choice for ultimate adventure treks to the Poles as well as expeditions that cover some of the harshest terrain on the planet, and the Southern Cross 1 is another contender for such expeditions.

“It is created to withstand tough outdoor conditions, while being extremely lightweight. It weighs in at 1.69kg, which is less than 2 bags of sugar, and takes just four or five minutes to pitch – a vital feature when you’re challenged by extreme environments.”

Derbyshire-based Terra Nova Equipment has a long heritage and has been producing some of the world’s best outdoor gear for over 20 years.

A Terra Nove spokesman added that Terra Nova products were tried and tested in both the company’s own labs and in the most extreme environments across the planet.
