MP Pauline Latham has welcomed figures published by the Office for National Statistics showing a further drop in the number of people claiming unemployment benefits in Mid Derbyshire.
November’s figures show that only 372 people now claim Jobseeker’s Allowance in the constituency, which is a drop of 34 on last month’s results.
Mrs Latham, MP for Mid Derbyshire, said: “It is great to see that unemployment has fallen in Mid Derbyshire yet again.
“These figures show that now more families in the area have a regular pay packet and a secure income.
“I am hopeful that the reforms announced in December’s Autumn Statement will continue to help business grow and provide more jobs for more people.”
Figures released this month show a reduction in Jobseekers Allowance claimants of 2,533 across the east Midlands from 42,223 in October to 38,690 in November – a fall of 17,475 compared with November 2013. The Derbyshire figure showed a drop of 434 from 7,570 to 7,136 for the month, a reduction of 3,299 for the year.
Chief executive George Cowcher, of East Midlands chamber of commerce, said: “The continuing fall in the number of claimants is indicative of the economy. The East Midlands has been one of the main drivers of the recovery.
