A survey has found that Alfreton is cheapest place to rent a shop in the East Midlands.
Research by real estate advisory firm Colliers International found that shop space in the town can be rented from only £30 per sq ft.
According to the firm’s annual Midsummer Retail Report, the most expensive rents are in the three major cities in the region.
Nottingham topped the table, fetching £190 per sq ft, Leicester £185 and Derby £140.
Overall, the average cost of renting retail space in the East Midlands has fallen 5.7 per cent over the past year.
Nick Round, national head of shopping centre leasing at Colliers International, said the research demonstrated that the gulf between the performance of major city and town centres and traditional suburban high streets was continuing to widen.
He said: “Shoppers now expect a complete leisure experience, incorporating a wide variety of entertainment, food, drink and retail brands.
“City centres and dedicated malls are in a better position to offer this.
“Traditional high streets, such as in Alfreton, just can’t compete – they lack the variety of stores and simply just aren’t exciting enough.”
