ALFRETON Town Council is set to splash out £25,000 to ensure a sparkling Christmas for locals and visitors to the town.
The council has agreed to commit the cash for the festive lights display and the customary tree.
The Christmas lighting display accounts for 20 per cent of the town council’s precept and will be funded from council tax payments from Alfreton residents.
The town council takes on the full management of the Christmas lights and is one of the few in the country whichmeets all the costs of the display, including the reimbursement of electricity costs. Leader of the council Cllr Scott Walker said some local businesses were unwilling to continue to allow their electricity supply to be used despite the authority meeting the supply costs. He said the council was now calling on local businesses and organisations to get involved with the display.
He said: “It will be a good opportunity for more local businesses to play their part in brightening the town and enhancing the Christmas experience, which must be good for business.”
