A BOXING club in Denby open to men and women has been ‘knocked out’ after landing Lottery cash.

The Power Gym Amateur Boxing Club was awarded £9,981 to run boxing and training sessions for local youngsters, encouraging them to get fit and engage in positive activities.

Boxers Gordon Watson and Suzanne Hemsley set the club up at the Denby Institute in January, along with club chairman Matt Smith, and run classes for adults and kids in the evenings.

Gordon, 24, who works by day as a sales manager at a construction company, said: “The money will pay for state of the art aerobic machinery and weights, which will give people the chance to train for half the price of going to the gym.

“It offers kids discipline – it makes sure they’re off the streets and helps them to get organised. It’s all about health and well-being.

“The money has helped us out no end – it will allow us to pay our coaches and make sure our boxers all have access to state-of-the-art equipment.”

Gordon says all profits go back into the gym’s rent and estimates around £45,000 has been spent on the club so far.

The club currently boasts six registered boxers – three of whom are women – which Gordon says is “really unusual”.

Classes, which are “rammed” run on week nights. Children aged eight to 11 have classes on Mondays and Fridays, from 6.30pm to 7.30pm. On Tuesdays and Thursdays there are adults from 5.30pm to 7.30pm and on Wednesdays there is a women’s only class from 6.30pm.

Gordon, who has been fighting for about four years as a super-middle weight, has his second professional fight on October 15 at Mansfield Civic Centre.

Fifty-eight schemes across the East Midlands received over £460,000 from the Big Lottery Fund’s Awards for All programme last week.

Mick McGrath, Big Lottery Fund’s head of the East Midlands region, said: “By supporting children and young people to lead healthier and happier lifestyles, these projects are all contributing to their communities in a remarkable way and we are delighted to be able to support them.”
