A former heroin user was caught ‘red-handed’ stealing a belt for a friend, a court heard.

Jamie Taylor, 32, of Greenhill Avenue, Ripley, pleaded guilty to the offence at Chesterfield magistrates’ court on Friday.

Gillian Foxcroft, prosecuting, said the theft happened at The Old Factory Shop in Ripley on May 20.

She told the court: “He was caught red-handed. He hid the £6 belt under his top and was confronted then threw the belt to the ground. He said he didn’t have any money and a friend needed a belt so he took it.”

Representing himself in court, Taylor said: “I shouldn’t have done it – I’m sorry.

“I’ve been bored. I’ve not been on heroin.”

He was given a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £100.
