Blind runner Tom Briggs is set to tackle the Bupa Great North Run this weekend to raise money to help train guide dogs.
Tom, 27, from Ripley is taking part because he has a guide dog called Winnie and he knows the difference the animal can make to a person with sight problems when it comes to living independently.
He said: “I took part in this year’s London Marathon which was quite a challenge, but at least I know what to expect. It can be a challenge as there’s a lot of other runners about, which can make it difficult at times.”
He will run the famous marathon in Newcastle with his guide Amy Bradley.
He added: “Winnie has really helped me gain more independence which is absolutely brilliant.
“I’m able to get out and about a lot more and get across roads and walk on curbs safely now.”
