A project which helps local people get involved in physical activity in Amber Valley, has been handed a government ‘Big Society Award’.
The Derbyshire Village Games Project has worked in partnership with Amber Valley Borough Council for the past three years and sees organisers host fun calender ‘inter-village’ sport events throughout the year as well as giving support to communities in setting up their own sport clubs.
Cabinet member for healthier places to live at the council Cllr Steven Hayes, said: “This is fantastic recognition for a team who have worked tirelessly to ensure that our communities are happier and healthier. We already have nationally recognised first class leisure centres and this award for our village games project demonstrates our commitment to provide activities right in the heart of communities”.
The awards were created by the Prime Minister in 2010 to recognise individuals, groups and organisations going ‘above and beyond’ to strengthen local communities.
