An honour to conduct choir

Your photograph concerning the Somercotes Choral Society, printed in the Ripley and Heanor News (April 5, 2012, on page 11) shows the guest performers, piano accompanists and conductor prior to a choral concert in the Ripley Leisure Centre on Saturday, April 21, 1991, entitled ‘An Evening with Franz Lehair’.

The two principal singing guest artists were Robert Carpenter Turner (Baritone, second left) and the late Marion Martin (Soprano, second right).

The two piano accompanists were Alan Blackburn, headmaster of Swanwick Hall School first left) and June Waddoups (centre). The man on the far right is the choir conductor, J. Stuart Bradshaw (myself).

I had the honour of conducting this wonderful choir for 25 years, from 1974 to 1999. Our twice-yearly concerts were very popular, and frequently filled the Ripley Leisure Centre.

May I also take this opportunity to thank Mrs S. Horrod most sincerely for the very kind remarks she made concerning myself in the following week’s issue of your paper.
