VANDALS toppled over the Alfreton Christmas tree just days after work started on this year’s festive light display.
The incident happened on Thursday, October 27, outside Alfreton House in the town centre and caused “considerable damage” to the £2,500 tree.
A council spokesman said the latest attack is expected to run to a bill of many hundreds of pounds.
Town Mayor councillor Marlene Bennett MBE, said: “I am saddened and disappointed by this mindless vandalism, once again the residents of Alfreton will have to pick up the bill for this act of stupidity.
“Residents can be assured that the tree will be fully repaired and back in place for the switch on November 24.”
Cllr John Walker, executive member for the environment and regeneration, said: “We will not be put off by the mindless few who risk spoiling the display for the rest of the twn and its visitors.
“We have asked the police to fully investigate the incident, as well as supplementing the CCTV in the area to make sure any further vandals can be caught.”
Anyone with any information about the crime should contact Derbyshire Police on 101.
