“This England” was the theme of the annual flower festival at Alfreton Wesley Church.

More than a dozen floral displays depicted the various cultures, traditions and features which are part of our country’s heritage.

Arrangements ranged from an English country garden and Guy Fawkes Night to a maypole, pageantry and pantomime – not forgetting the English weather!

Football, cricket, the English “cuppa” and children’s writer Beatrix Potter were also included.

The displays were the work of church members and friends, with a centenary display by Alfreton Women’s Institute, which meets at the church.

The two-day festival attracted lots of visitors, and traditional English teas proved popular.

Sunday services were conducted by Mrs Jenny Kilgour of Derby and Mrs Gill Irish of Swanwick.

Flower festivals have been a feature of the church calendar for some years, with musicals, journeys and childhood memories being among previous themes.
