THANKS to Jenifer Giblin, the chairman of Marlpool Women’s Club, we are now able to add plenty of details to a recent picture we featured about a presentation of cheques to three local charities.

The picture was taken at Heanor Town Hall in March 1986. From left is the late Eileen Smith, treasurer, seen presenting £100 to Mrs Stokes and Mrs Watson, representing Heanor and District Mencap Society. The late Marion Astle, secretary, is seen presenting the same amount to Wendy May for Ripley Social Services for the Blind, and Wendy Gower is seen receiving the last cheque for the Deaf Unit at Aldercar School, from Barbara Rollinson, the chairman of the club.

The club was formed as long ago as April 1964 and still meets weekly on Tuesday evenings at 7pm from September to July. Nowadays, the ladies hold their meetings at the Wilmot Street Centre, Heanor.

Mrs Giblin kindly contacted us to explain that the club is still thriving and members enjoy a very varied programme with speakers, demonstrations, social evenings, outings, etc. Fund raising meetings are also still held for various charities, especially local ones.

Mts Giblin informs us that new members are always welcome to join their happy band of ladies.
