THIS picture from our archives shows a presentation of cash to Ripley’s Midland Railway Centre.

It was taken in 1988 and and was certainly an impressive amount with £5,000 going to the Butterley-based venue.

We are not sure where the money came from or how it was raised, although the cheque has the name Midland Railway Enterprises.

We do not know what this group was and can only assume it was an organisation that raised money for the centre possibly.

The railway centre, which operates steam trains and runs a museum is hugely popular with tourists and steam train fans.

It’s Thomas the Tank Engine events attract thousands of young fans of the little blue engine when they are held. Youngsters get the chance to ride on a train pulled by Thomas and his friends. The centre usually get the Fat Controller along to wow young fans at the Thomas days too.

Midland Railex model railway event is a new and event at the centre this year. The two-day event will take place on August 13 and 14. The Railex Exhibition will be open from 10am until 4.30pm on both days.
