Beautiful old pictures show Derbyshire railway station in former glory

Old pictures show a long-abandoned Derbyshire railway station – once named among the most at-risk buildings in Britain – in happier times.

After standing relatively untouched since passenger services ended in 1967, plans are afoot to refurbish and restore the Grade II*-listed Wingfield Station, which first opened in 1840.

The station – named as one of the country’s 10 most threatened Victorian and Edwardian structures back in 2012 – is now set to be restored to its original 19th Century condition after the Derbyshire Historic Buildings Trust took over the building.

After Derbyshire Times photographer Brian Eyre was invited inside to capture the building as it now, in a state of disrepair, these pictures show the building in happier times, from shortly after it opened, in the 1950s and just after closure, with broken windows showing the closure was beginning to take its toll.
