Troupes on their marks for Bakewell's Day of Dance

Dance fans will be flocking to the streets of Bakewell on Saturday in a celebration of styles from around the world.

The 14th annual International Day of Dance will be kicking off the town’s carnival week.

More than 20 troupes will be delighting crowds in various locations around the town on Saturday, June 25, with everything from belly dancing to flamenco, Indian folk to Arabian dance.

The day will be hosted by Bakewell-based Appalachian troupe Well Heeled.

Highlighting the world of dance will be Kilika whose speciality is Armenian steps, Mulembas d’Africa who focus on Angolan creations and Raqs Jamilia whose chosen style is Arabic.

Bellydance Flames, headed by Salise Pearson in Matlock, have been performing since 2005. Their style is based on Egyptian belly dancing combined with Turkish, Lebanese and various other dance styles.

Chesterfield Pole Athletes, run by former national champion Lorna Thomas, make a return after a successful performance last year.

Black Pig Border Morris, pictured, have performed at every Bakewell Day of Dance since it started.

Displays from Biggin Primary School, Matlock’s Highfield School, Peak Performance Theatre School, La Tierra Flamenco and M&J Dance Centre (ballroom and Latin) will highlight the wealth of talent which can be found in the area.

Demonstrations start at 11am at locations including Riverside Gardens, Bath Gardens, Portland Square and The Crescent.

Anyone who is inspired by the displays can learn how to salsa, swing dance and tango at workshops in the town hall. For more details, see www.bakewelldayofdance.co.uk
