Nottingham Playhouse, Writing East Midlands and Mouthy Poets, in association with Apples and Snakes, present Shake the Dust: Regional Final at the theatre on Saturday, June 9.

Young poets across the East Midlands have the chance to show off their ‘slamming skills’ in the regional final of Shake the Dust, a national celebration of the power of spoken word.

Shake the Dust is part of the London 2012 Festival, a spectacular 12-week nationwide celebration running from June 21-September 9, bringing together leading artists from across the world with the very best from the UK.

Young people from across the East Midlands have worked with leading performance poets to help them write, craft and devise performance poems which will be showcased as part of tonight’s regional final.

The highest scoring team from this event will go on to represent the East Midlands at the National Shake the Dust Weekend.

Twilight, writing and performance workshops including an open-mic, will be led by the Mouthy Poets with special guest writers and artists and are open to anyone with an interest in the spoken word.

Artistic director Jacob Sam-La Rose said: “Shake the Dust is more than a poetry competition. It’s a chance for young people across the country to come together and share their stories through spoken word. For many, this will be a life-changing experience. It’s about building community and shining a spotlight on voices that would otherwise be unheard.”

Beatrice Udeh, creative producer – diversity at Nottingham Playhouse added: “Hosting Shake the Dust at Nottingham Playhouse is an amazing coup for a leading Regional Theatre which produces nationally acclaimed, innovative work.

“It is exciting to be working with the same dynamic team who brought you the “Say Sum Thin” shows, and it is even more exciting to anticipate how the young Slam Teams have been inspired by their professional Poet mentors to produce words that will feel like magic dust on our ears.”

Workshops run from 4pm-6pm and the performance is from 6.30pm–9.30pm. Call the box office for more details on 0115 941 9419.
