Christmas is covered for all ages at Derby Theatre this year.

Derby Theatre will produce and present two festive productions this Christmas, which promise to enthral and delight audiences young and not so young.

From December 5 until January 4, a vibrant new adaptation of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol will be the big, spectacular festive production in the main house.

Miserly old humbug Ebenezer Scrooge has no time for Christmas until one chilly December night he is visited by the ghost of his old business partner, Jacob Marley. Marley calls upon three spirits to guide Scrooge on a mysterious journey through Christmases past, present and future, revealing the error of his cold-hearted ways.

Along the way he encounters the mistletoe and merriment of Mr. Fezziwig’s dancing party,Tiny Tim’s generous spirit and the true consequences of his meanness and misery.

Neil Duffield’s faithful adaptation of Charles Dickens’s treasured novel retains all the magic and sparkle of this much-loved festive story. Made at Derby Theatre and performed by a professional talented ensemble cast, the show will feature a host of rousing Christmas carols and will be a heart-warming experience for all the family. It is recommended for those aged seven and over.

In the Studio, from December 9-December 28, there is something special for the younger theatregoer (aged three and over) and their families, a deliciously delightful re-telling of Hansel And Gretel, presented by Red Earth Theatre in association with Derby Theatre.

This classic tale, told with imagination and wonder is the perfect play for children with an appetite for magical storytelling.

Sarah Brigham, artistic director at Derby Theatre, said: “We are incredibly excited about our Christmas offer for this year.

“A fresh, yet faithful, big and bold version of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol will run in our Main House. This much-loved Christmas tale will be a magical, festive theatrical experience for audiences of all ages.

“We are also thrilled to be working with locally-based Red Earth Theatre Company this year to present a Christmas treat to our theatregoers in our Studio, a colourful and creative retelling of Hansel And Gretel, perfect for that first visit to the theatre.”
