A group for adults with learning difficulties will benefit from a new comedy being staged in Alfreton.

Proceeds from Hero will go to the Belper-based Penguin Club.

The play is being presented at Alfreton Wesley Church in Ellesmere Avenue on Thursday and Friday, July 24 and 25, at 7pm.

Producer David Hopkinson said admission would be free and collections would be taken for the club funds.

He said: “Each play we produce supports a different charity. We have had close links with the Penguin Club for some time and members visit our church each Christmas to present their festive show.

“We felt that it would be a good gesture to help support their funds.”

Hero is set in the 1960s as plans are being made to honour the bravery of a World War I veteran. But the ex-Army man’s family discover that some secrets are best left undisturbed.

The three-act play has a cast of ten, ranging from teens to OAPs.

“It is a fitting play to stage this year, as this is the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War,” said David.

The Alfreton group has been presenting plays for nearly 25 years and now stages productions three times a year.
