Legendary rock band Focus will be performing at The Flowerpot in Derby on Friday, May 9.
Still fronted by founder member Thijs Van Leer, they will be making their first appearance at the Flowerpot.
With their unique brand of progressive rock, Focus manifested themselves at the start of the ‘70s as the most successful and appreciated of all the Dutch pop-rock exports.
Fronted by Thijs Van Leer, and best known for their hits Hocus Pocus, House of The King and Sylvia, as well as critically acclaimed albums Moving Waves, Focus 3 and Hamburger Concerto, the iconic Dutch music masters are back with their tenth album, guaranteed to please their legions of fans.
A new Focus era has arrived. There is a rejuvenated passion in the new compositions that adorn the new album Focus X, which features a full-scale Roger Dean painting on the cover. Thijs van Leer, who holds the distinction of being the first ever knighted musician in Holland, said: “It’s a thrill to have finally completed Focus X; we are all ecstatic and looking forward to playing the new material on the forthcoming Focus X World Tour.”
King King featuring Alan Nimmo are to be the guest performers at the King Street venue on Saturday, May 10.
Fronted by one of the UK’s best blues guitarists, King King were winner of the Britain’s Best Blues Band award at both 2012 and 2013’s British Blues Awards.
“Softly softly” is not a maxim that King King are familiar with. Since surging into life last year they have barely stopped for breath, and their electrifying sound and scorching live shows have generated more of a thunderous roar than a buzz. Support comes from Devlin Blue.
Finally, on Thursday, May 15, you can see Gerry McAvoy’s Bands Of Friends with their celebration of the music of Rory Gallagher.
This evening shines the spotlight on one of Ireland’s most famous, popular and most celebrated performers presented by a band of musicians who knew him personally.
The Band Of Friends is not a tribute to Rory, more of a celebration of his life and music. Rory’s music reached a massive audience, covering all parts of the globe and producing some of the greatest rock/blues albums of the 60s, 70s and the 80s.
The group is made up of Gerry McAvoy (bass guitar), Ted McKenna (drums) and Marcel Scherpenzeel (guitar/vocals). Support comes from the brilliant blues troubadour Matt Woosey.
Doors open at 8pm for all three gigs. Admission is £15 for Focus, £12 for King King and £15 for Gerry McAvoy’s Band Of Friends. Advance tickets are available from The Flowerpot and RAW Promotions. They are also online at www.rawpromo.co.uk
