The Derbyshire Singers recently completed their year-long celebrations for the group’s 40th anniversary, which included a four-day trip to Venice.

Their choral journey took them to three of the most beautiful, wealthy and prestigious churches in the city, plus the famous Basilica of Saint Mark’s.

The programmes were varied, depending on the roles the choir was expected to take, from a full concert to singing several pieces in a Mass. Most of the music reflected the influential composers in Venice during the transition period from Renaissance to Baroque – Gabrieli, Monteverdi, Pergolesi and Vivaldi.

A spokesperson for the choir said: “It was an amazing experience, from walking through the narrow alleys, crossing the small piazzas and over the numerous canal bridges to travelling on the waterbuses (vaporetti) in our uniforms to get to the churches in which we were to sing.

“On the last evening, when we came out of St. Marks, the photographer asked us to stand in our places so we could have a record of our visit. As we stood there, we noticed a crowd gathering around us, obviously expecting us to sing. Not to disappoint them our conductor, Lynne Clark, took us through one of the songs we had just sung inside the Basilica. Singing in St Mark’s Square - an extra thrill to end our visit!

“I think we all have now come down to earth again and are rehearsing hard for our next concert.”
