Derby’s Market Place will play host to a wide array of events and activities over the coming months, aimed at providing people of all ages with opportunities to get involved,

National Holidays will be celebrated, market traders will sell their wares, music lovers will be able to indulge in opera, there will be thrill-seeking rides galore for the younger, and more daring, ones and the Lady Boys of Bangkok will return with their unique and boisterous show.

Food lovers can look forward to a wide range of local produce and continental food being available to buy when the Farmers’ Markets will set up their stalls on the third Thursday of every month and the Italian Market, the Italia in Piazza, will see Italian market sellers bringing their taste of Italy to Derby, with a wide variety of foods including cheeses, cured meats, cakes and olive oils to the Market Place on May 13 and 14, and again during the autumn on October 28 and 29.

If you’re in the mood for a wedding, are feeling patriotic and cannot wait to see what the Royal bride-to-be, Kate Middleton, will be wearing then you can pop along on April 29 when the eagerly-anticipated Royal Wedding will be shown on the Big Screen. Staying with the Screen, music and opera lovers are in for a treat when they will get the chance, via a live link-up with the Royal Opera House, to see the screenings of three operas (Manon on June 1, Madam Butterfly on July 4 and

Cendrillion on July 13).

A St George’s Day-related event, which will include short Shakespeare performances, will take place on April 23 and the Caribbean Carnival procession will culminate on the Market Place on July 16 and 17.

Also during July, on the 27th of the month, there will be a London 2012 One Year to Go event where there will be lots of opportunities to try sport and art activities themed around the Olympic and Paralympics games.

Derby Feste will dramatically dominate the Market Place again this year from September 23 to 25 with a whole range of spectacular outdoor displays, parades, events and activities.

Derby LIVE is also in talks for the return of the massive and spectacular Observation Wheel in the Market Place in the autumn.

Cllr Alan Grimadell, Derby City Council cabinet member for leisure and culture, said: “The events and activities schedule is very exciting and is sure to make the Market Place a vibrant place to be and experience throughout the rest of 2011.”
