onE of the most popular and acclaimed operas of all time is to be performed by Opera North on their latest visit to Nottingham’s Theatre Royal.

Carmen, by Georges Bizet, was judged a failure when it was first performed in 1875, and its poor initial reception is said to have played a major factor in the composer’s death later that year.

But over the intervening years, it has grown in stature and reputation to become one of the greatest of all operatic offerings, crammed full of memorable music and passionate action.

In this new production, sung in French, you will experience a tale of love, freedom and imprisonment, addiction and relationships with some of the most recognised and loved music ever written.

The bold and daring American director Daniel Kramer brings his vision to the story of a fiery young woman and those who surround her, with acclaimed singer Heather Shipp in the title role.

Carmen is conducted by Andreas Delfs, directed by Daniel Kramer, with set design by Soutra Gilmour, costumes designed by Gabrielle Dalton, lighting designed by Charles Balfour and choreography by Lucy Burge.

It can be seen at the Theatre Royal on February 22 and 26 and tickets, costing £15-£55, are available from the box office on 0115 9895555.
