A Derbyshire-based youth contemporary dance company has been extended following a successful pilot period – providing more opportunities for talented local youngsters to develop their performance skills.
Derbyshire Youth Dance Company was launched last autumn with auditions held earlier this year.
It is run by Derby-based Déda, one of the UK’s leading dance centres, in partnership with Chesterfield Borough Council, Chesterfield Theatres’ Winding Wheel where it is based, and the Dance4’s Centre for Advanced Training (CAT).
The dance company was originally set up as a pilot for five months with young dancers coming together to rehearse and perform for Interface 13 at Derby Theatre in March – the county finals of the national U.Dance competition framework - and then at the Winding Wheel theatre in May as part of Chesterfield Community Arts Festival.
Their success and commitment has led to the dance company now being continued until spring 2014.
Planned activity so far includes further auditions, intensive workshops and rehearsals during school holidays, and performing in next year’s county competition framework with the potential for them to then compete in the regional and national finals.
Clare Limb, dance development manager at Déda explained: “The Derbyshire Youth Dance Company was set up in partnership with Chesterfield Borough Council to be part of the national dance development programme with progression routes and opportunities for the young people into the Dance4 Centre for Advanced Training in Nottingham.
“The response from young dancers and the calibre of the work that they have achieved at both Interface and at Chesterfield Community Arts Festival has been so impressive that the pilot programme has now been extended well into next year.
“The establishment of the youth dance company will give talented young dancers the opportunity to work with top choreographers and develop the contemporary dance skills that they may well choose to progress through higher education and then go into a career in the arts as already happens through our established youth academy programme based at Déda.
“We were keen to replicate these opportunities for young people in the north of the county – breaking down any geographical barriers that they may face to access high level training in contemporary dance and the success of Derbyshire Youth Dance Company so far has been amazing.”
