Derby LIVE has teamed up with local children’s writer Caryl Hart and Derbyshire-based The Babbling Vagabonds for the magical production of The Christmas Chocolate Shop.

It runs at the Guildhall Theatre in the city from December 12-29.

Babbling Vagabonds were formed in 2000 by three theatre-makers, who had met while studying at Rose Bruford College. The Babblers based themselves in the heart of the Peak District and from there began creating family friendly theatre for rural audiences.

In the past 13 years, they have created over 20 shows and performed to over 100,000 people in a variety of locations including moonlit woodlands, windswept moors, abandoned quarries and village halls.

Caryl Hart started writing children’s stories 13 years ago when her eldest daughter was born and became a full time writer in 2007. Her first books, Rhino? What Rhino? and Don’t Dip Your Chips in Your Drink, Kate! were published in 2009. Both went on to win awards. She now has 11 books in print and another ten in production.

Caryl lives near Bakewell and 2013 has been her year of trying new things.

She has been wild swimming, opened a new bookshop and butchered a deer. Seeing The Christmas Chocolate Shop come to life on stage will be her favourite “first” of all!

The Christmas Chocolate Shop is set at Christmas in a busy city as the snow starts to fall.

However, away from the hustle and bustle, a sad old shopkeeper shivers alone. Only memories fill Emilio’s empty shop and he misses his wife, Florentina so much. When a magical urchin enters his run-down grocery shop looking for food, she rekindles a spark of his long-forgotten dream.

Tickets are priced at £10.25 with concessions and family tickets available and can be purchased on 01332 255800.
