The secretary of Heanor Musical Theatre Company is calling for more men to join it, saying , ‘you don’t need to be Pavarotti’ to take part.

Lillian Rowley, of Marshall Street, Heanor, says the adult group of the company, formally known as Heanor Operatic Society, is suffering the same fate as all amateur operatic groups around the country - a lack of males.

She said: “You don’t have to have any previous experience at all.

“We are not asking for people to be professional singers, or have particularly fantastic voices.

“We have an excellent musical director here – we just want people keen to learn to sing and act and have a good time.”

Lillian said there are now 22 members of the company’s adult section - most of which are women. She is looking for ten new male members to join.

But despite fears echoed by the group’s members last month, Lillian says it is not in danger of folding due to the drop in numbers.

She said: “We have been going for 40 years and we are very much hoping to make the 50th anniversary.

“We are looking towards the future – it just might be a little different to what we are used to.”

Lillian said the drop in members this year will mean taking on productions which require a smaller cast - unless more join soon.

Plans are in the pipeline to stage Bugsy Malone in spring and she said some of the younger members are looking to begin putting on murder mystery evenings next year.
