A group of 24 talented sporting stars from across Amber Valley have shared in a bursary pot totalling £5,730 from business network ICON.

All of the athletes are either currently competing for England or Great Britain or are part of recognised national development squads or club academy structures.

They will use their bursaries to help them meet training and competition costs as they bid for further success in their sports.

The deputy mayor of Amber Valley, Cllr Angela Ward; David Joy, who is the director of Derbyshire Sport; and Andy Shooter from the Community Sports Trust met the athletes to congratulate them, during a presentation at Belper Town Football Club.

In addition to the bursaries, each athlete was presented with a £50 DC Leisure activity card by Jackie Goacher from DC Leisure, to use at Alfreton Leisure Centre, Ripley Leisure Centre or William Gregg VC Leisure Centre in Heanor.

Amber Valley Borough Council and the Community Sports Trust are members of ICON, which was set up by Derbyshire Sport as part of the work to create a lasting legacy from the London 2012 Games in Derbyshire.

Cllr Stephen Hayes, who is cabinet member for healthier places to Live, said: “Amber Valley Borough Council is proud of its young sports stars and is pleased to be able to offer them continued support through our membership of ICON.”
