Ripley swimmer Emma Smithurst put two years of injury nightmares behind her to clinch a third place at last week’s British Championships.
The championships took place at The Manchester Aquatics Centre and saw Emma compete in three events.
But it was in the 400-metre individual medley where Emma clinched a place on the podium.
Twenty-year-old Emma is a member of Derventio eXcel and City of Derby swimming clubs, but is now based at Swansea ITC under the guidance of coach Bud McAllister.
An overjoyed Emma said: “This is a great result considering it was totally unexpected.
“Hopefully this puts the injuries I have had over the last two years firmly to bed.
“It had frustratingly got to the stage where I could not train for six months and had to seriously consider retirement from competition.
“My coach, Bud, is nursing me along steadily as I have basically had to start all over again from scratch.
“We’ll just take each day at a time and see what happens but for now it is a great feeling to be able to show what I am capable of again”.
