Alfreton CC got back to winning ways in Division One of the Derbyshire County Cricket League to secure promotion but their weekend didn’t end so well with cup defeat on Bank Holiday Monday at the hands of Marehay in the Marston’s Smooth Trophy.
On Saturday, Alfreton hosted Rolleston, looking to bounce back from defeat at the hands of Stainsby Hall in the previous. week
The home side won the toss and bowled first, 69 being put on for the first wicket before John Aspinall made the breakthrough, Mark James falling for 31.
Gareth Marshall (79) and Tom Rutler (63) set up the visitors’ total with Scott Baker (22 from 11) as they finished on 230-6, Matt Lineker the pick of the bowlers with 3-51.
In reply, Alfreton reached 89 for the first wicket before Lineker fell for 66. Captain Alex Mace joined Ryan Bramwell and they pushed the score past 150.
However, they fell in quick succession for 28 and 61 respectively and with Andy Gwatkin (6) and Tom Bentley (4) following soon after; the score had been reduced to 182-5.
John Aspinall (37*) ensured there were no further blips, helped to the total with three balls to spare by Elliot Savidge (11) and Jonathon Clarke (14 not out).
On Monday, Alfreton lost out in the final of the Marston’s Smooth Trophy to Marehay, their rivals at the top of the Division One league table.
Alfreton won the toss and bowled first, Marehay setting 246 in their innings, Adam Burton the pick of the bowlers with 3-47.
James Kyte (69), Jonathan Bradder (49), Stephen Lee (40) and Gaz Buckley (33) were all integral in the competitive total.
In reply, Alfreton struggled to keep momentum and ultimately fell 51 runs short. Lineker (37), Bentley (32) and Gwatkin (31) all got starts but Marehay ran out winners with Alfreton ending on 195 all out.
This weekend, Alfreton travel to take on Ambergate.
