TEN Ripley runners took part in the prestigious Nottingham Half-Marathon and another four competed in the full event.
Despite forecasted heavy rain, runners were greeted with beautiful sunshine en-route but with the odd gust of wind! A fantastically well-organised event with around 7000 runners taking part.
Starting at the Victoria Embankment, the half-marathon finishes here but at the same point, it’s here that the poor Marathon runners have to leave the halfers and continue for another 13.1 mile!
Fantastic runs for all Ripley’s team with Dean Taylor first home in 1 hour 24 minutes. Jerry Bateman finished in 1 hour 39 with Jonathan Bruce not far behind in 1 hour 41. Cathy Cresswell was first for the Ripley ladies in a personal best time of 1 hour 52. Not far behind were Vicky in 1 hour 57 and Michael Corrigan in 1 hour 49. Lorraine Griffiths finished a fantastic 2 hours 9 and Amy Bradley had a great run finishing in 2 hours 20.
The most inspirational runner has to go to club secretary Dennis Holmes whose son has spent the last five weeks in QMC in intensive care with his family at his bedside. Although he is still very poorly, Jacob is slowly improving and putting up a really strong fight. Dennis has not run a single mile in all this time but made it to the finish line in Nottingham in a very respectable 2 hours running alongside Paula Brudenell. On completion he went straight back to the QMC to be with his young son.
The full marathon takes runners right out to Holme Pierrepoint and the National Water Sports Centre and back past the outskirts of Colwick Park.
Ripley runners included Richard Phillis who managed to knock a staggering ten minutes off his personal best and, finishing first for the club in 3 hours 26! Wayne Yearwood again took an unbelievable 17 minutes off his PB and finished in 3 hours 37 minutes! Anthony Davies finished in 3 hours 59 and Carl Hopkinson finished in a respectable time of 4 hours 10 despite suffering from terrible cramp. Meanwhile Claire Duffin Ripley’s resident tri-athlete took part in the Derby Triathlon consisting of swim, bike and run.
Claire completed all three events despite the strong winds and coming off her bike after a mile, in a fantastic 1 hour and 20mins. Claire completed the 400m swim in 9 minutes and 4, 18k bike in 41 minutes 6 and the 5k run in 26 minutes and 15 seconds. All in all she was 11 minutes faster than last year so a truly outstanding performance.
Earlier on in the week a couple of Ripley runners took part in the Chevin Fell Race.
With just a 1.5-mile route for the juniors, Alfie Swift finished first for Ripley in an outstanding time of 11 minutes and 17 secs.Angela Forte took part in the adult race which was three-mile finishing in 58th place in just over 29 minutes.
