April 13 will be a special day for over 35,000 runners planning to complete this year’s Virgin London Marathon but it will be just a little bit extra special for Jerry Bateman, Ripley Running Club’s chairman, as it will be his 20th time in this event.
To mark this rather special anniversary, Jerry who has run somewhere in the order of 100 marathons, stretching as far afield as Auckland, New Zealand, will be trying to raise funds for his chosen charity, The John van Geest Cancer Research Charity, which is based at Nottingham Trent University and aims to save lives by researching innovative ways to diagnose and treat cancer.
As a former winner of the Nottingham Robin Hood Marathon in 2004, and with a personal best marathon time set in the 1990s in London of 2 hours 36 minutes, Jerry has always been a competitive athlete rather than a charity fun runner so will hopefully receive lots of support from his many friends in the running community and help mark this very special occasion.

Ripley Running Club meets every Tuesday at 6.45pm at Ripley Leisure Centre and encourages runners of all abilities to come and join for a run.
