It was a busy weekend at Ashbourne Golf Club on July 21 and 22 with the July Medal played on the Saturday and The Derek Earp Trophy, which is a Stableford Competition and is played in memory of a very popular past captain of the club, on the Sunday.
The scores reflected the fact that following the very wet weather the course is playing much longer than is normal at this time of year and this was reflected by the fact that the standard scratch on Saturday was two over par.
The first division of the medal, which was sponsored by Lexus (Derby), was won by Steve Smith, who lives over the border in Leek, with a net 68 off his handicap of eleven and he was followed home by local man Jason Clowes with a 69.
The second division was won by the in form Mark Burford who shot a superb net 66 but others in the division were in slightly less sparkling form and second place went to Frank Marshall with a net 75.
A similar situation was evident in division three with the winner and long time member Peter Wood shooting a net 70 but no one else in contention with Chris Sowter coming second with a net 77.
The scores on the Sunday were only a little better although this may in part at least be due to the fact that a number of the competitors were suffering from the after affects of a party at the club the night before which was apparently enjoyed to the full by all concerned!
The winner of the Derek Earp Trophy, who presumably was not at the party, was local farmer Richard Archer from Hulland who scored an excellent 39 points in the second division and was followed home by vice–captain Noel Oversby with 35 points.
The first division was won by James Robinson with 38 points closely followed by Daniel Waring with 37 points and the third division winner was Tom Fox also with 38 points with Dave Peregrine in second five points behind.
The next major event at the club is the Brough Jeffrey Trophy on August 4.
