A team of swimmers from Ripley RASCALS travelled to Market Drayton for the first round of the National Arena Swimming League, turning in an excellent performance at the prestigious event.
This is a competition featuring 392 teams in 64 galas across England and Wales, with over 13,000 swimmers in action.
The team put in a fine display, and were unlucky not to win on the night, being narrowly beaten by Radford. RASCALS finished on 209 points, an agonising five points behind Radford’s total. They finished well ahead of Market Harborough (188 points), Burntwood, Falcon and Dove Valley.
The outcome was in doubt right up until the last few races. RASCALS went into an early lead, and were 11 points ahead of Radford at the halfway stage but Radford finished strongly.
The boys’ under 13 team won five of their six races, with Tom Middup putting in some fine swims to win the 100m fly and 100m freestyle, both personal best times.
The under 11 year old girls also put in some strong performances, with Alisha Haslam and Molly Cooper both winning their races, and helping the freestyle and medley relay teams take first place, with teammates Lauren Clark and Lizzy Howe.
There were also wins for Jason Lockwood (100m breaststroke), Alice Richards (100 freestyle), Jamie Ingram (100m butterfly and 200m individual medley), Fearn Middleton (100m backstroke), and Adam Threlfall (100m backstroke and 100m butterfly).
There were a number of personal best times.
Head coach Glenn Fisher was proud of his swimmers and said afterwards: “There were some magnificent performances tonight, and the vocal and enthusiastic support from the parents really helped bring out the best in the team.”
The second round is on November 9.
