Belper 2nd XV 36

Ripley Rhinos 2nd XV 5

Rhinos 2nds lost out to a strong Belper 2nds 36-5 in this very hastily arranged friendly on Saturday.

Late fixture cry offs for both clubs saw this game get together at Belper RFC and Ripley were up against a younger, fitter side.

Two early tries were Belper’s reward for some good attacking play, though Ripley rallied and pushed them back before conceding a third try to go into half-time 19-0 behind.

The second half was a repeat of the first with Belper threatening in attack but the maroons looking solid when they could retain possession and run through the phases. One period of play led to replacement flanker James Emslie crashing over for Ripley’s only score. Three more Belper tries gave them the comfortable victory margin.

The best part of this match was that it took place, and saved 40 rugby players from finding something else to do of a Saturday afternoon. Second row Luke Larder was a willing carrier throughout on debut and winger Mark Parkin had an excellent game but the man of the match award went to second row Mike Symons, who used his experience to help guide his team on a difficult afternoon.
