A group of 15 swimmers from Ripley-based swimming club RASCALS competed recently at the Derbyshire Sprints in the 50m pool at Ponds Forge, achieving some fantastic results.
This event is organised by the Derbyshire Amateur Swimming Association, and encourages all Derbyshire swimmers to compete in a one-day competition in predominantly 50m races.
Longer events are also available to older swimmers who have achieved the qualifying times.
One of the outstanding swims of the day was by 11-year-old Molly Cooper, who held off a strong challenge in the 50m butterfly to finish in first place in a time of 35.70 seconds. Molly also finished in sixth place in 50m backstroke and tenth in 50m breaststroke.
Mia Barber (11) also had a successful day, finishing second in 50m backstroke in a time of 37.87 seconds. Mia was fifth in 50m butterfly, eighth in 50m breaststroke and ninth in 50m freestyle.
Other top ten finishes came from Thomas Higgins (third in 50m breaststroke), Aisha Haslam (seventh in 50m freestyle), Jason Lockwood (fourth in 50m breaststroke, sixth in 50m freestyle), Alexander Parr (third in 50m freestyle, sixth in 50m butterfly), Emily Field (eighth in 50m butterfly), Lauren-Sophie Clark (ninth in 50m backstroke) and Fearn Middleton (third in 200m backstroke, fifth in 100m backstroke and tenth in 200m freestyle).
There were also personal best times from Rosie Greenwood, Charlotte Middup, Georgia Lees, Sam Marsh, George Atkin and Andrew Parr.
All the swimmers gained valuable experience of competing in an ‘Olympic’-sized swimming pool, and did themselves proud.
