Amber Valley Hornets kept up their fine form with a 1-0 win at Matlock Baileans 3rds on Saturday in the Derbyshire League Division One.

Due to a slight mix-up, the Hornets had to start the match fielding 11 outfield players.

Alex Ormston added extra strength to the attack, and as Matlock pushed forward Jennie Bowmer and Rach Warner made some good tackles to ensure Matlock were kept outside shooting range.

The Hornets worked hard as a team and created some good openings of their own, but it was Kate Salt at the other end who cleared the ball off the line to keep the scoreline level before the Hornets’ keeper took to the field.

As the Hornets pushed forward it was the Matlock keeper who was the busier and was called into action to deny Sarah Joyce from close range. Ellesha Garner held the middle of the park well and distributed the ball well from picking up loose balls.

With the score level at half-time, the Hornets were fully aware a goal either way would probably take the points and focused on keeping possession of the ball and using the width of the pitch.

This paid off and saw Carol Hall make good progress on the right hand side and Sarah Poplar’s movement up front started to make gaps for other players to run into.

Matlock defended in numbers and prevented the Hornets from having many clearcut chances on goal, and even when they did break through, the keeper made great saves to keep the score level.

Matlock had a chance with a penalty corner, but Tracey Bonser swept the ball to safety. With the clock ticking Sarah Joyce weaved her way into the d, tried to round the keeper who saved, only to see the ball spin towards the line where Joyce scrambled it home.
