Amber Valley and Erewash Athletics Club’s Katie Rowe was a surprise winner of the U15 girls All-Rounder crown at the East Midlands Regional Sportshall Athletics Finals, held at Grantham.
Contesting the 2 Lap sprint, speed bounce and standing long jump, she topped the rankings out of the 23 girls on the day, scoring a magnificent 145 points out of a possible 150.
Along with clubmate Megan Bruce (fourth in the All-Rounder) and four Derbyshire teammates from Chesterfield AC, the U15 girls team were convincing winners over Leicestershire & Rutland in second place, and they now go through to represent the East Midlands in the National Sportshall Finals on April 7.
To take the All-Rounder title, Katie won the speed bounce and standing long jump and shared equal third in the two-lap sprint with Megan.
The U15 girls team will be joined at the Finals by the U13 girls and the U13 boys teams, who also had thrilling wins over the other county teams.
Falling just short of making it a Derbyshire clean sweep were the U15 boys, who finished second to a strong Nottinghamshire team.
However, Edward Barbour finished in fourth place in the All-Rounder U15 boys category in his first ever time representing the county at Sportshall athletics.
He took an individual silver medal in standing triple jump and a bronze in the 4 lap.
The Derbyshire U13 boys team were outstanding, winning by a huge margin overall and with every AVEAC athlete in the team winning a medal of some colour.
George Dave saved his best standing long jump for when it mattered to win gold, while there were silvers for Omar Aikman (high jump), Adam Berwick (vertical jump), Alex Gillot (two-lap sprint), William Collings (speed bounce) and Scott Ram (six-lap).
In the U13 girls age group, Emily Coope retained the four-lap title that she won in last year’s event and added a silver in the standing long jump.
Like Emily, Tamsin McGraw also retained the event she won last year, the gruelling six-lap race and both girls combined well to easily win the eight-lap parlauf. Lucy Berwick took her first ever medal in regional Sportshall, gaining a bronze in the six-lap and Cara Brown also won bronze in the shot.
